Imagine talking to your smartphone as someone who has the ability to perform trades on your behalf. Read me the latest emails, what appointments I have today, set a new choice for tomorrow at seven, take me to Piazza del Duomo in Milan, here are just some of the commands or questions you can give to the Google assistant .
L ‘ Narrator of Google has come for the vast majority of compatible phones, but there are still some who have not downloaded and enabled. Are you one of them and want to know how to activate Google Assistant ?
Voice assistants are deployed at an even faster rate than the speed at which smartphones themselves ( Siri for iPhone ) have spread . In countries where home speakers like Google Home or Amazon Echo or Apple HomePod are available, their spread is extremely fast.
The wait ended a few months ago with the Google Assistant arriving in Italian for a good amount of Android smartphones.

What is the Google Assistant for?
If you don’t know what we mean by the “ Ok Google ” commands and you are not familiar with the concept of a magic word in a speech recognition system, we will have to start from the beginning.
A magic word is a word or sequence of words that automatically activates any voice recognition system , and in this case “Ok Google” activates the intelligent assistant that all Android phones have integrated and that will allow us to search or perform tasks, simply talking to our smartphone.
Didn’t you know your phone has the Google Assistant app built in? Well yes, unless you use an Android version lower than 5.0 Lollipop, where surely “Ok Google” doesn’t work!
The voice assistant can be called up by holding down the central navigation button, but if we want to interact with the phone in hands-free mode, we need to activate “Ok Google” in the application settings.
The Google assistant already speaks Italian and “OK Google” works perfectly in our language, so once activated it will be sufficient to say the command “Ok Google” and our phone will respond quickly to answer any question, including colloquial language.
How to activate Google Assistant
Not all Android devices are compatible with the voice assistant. According to Google these are the necessary hardware and software requirements:
- Android 6.0 or later
- Google application 6.13 or later
- Google Play Services
- 1.5 GB of memory and a screen with a resolution of 720p
- Have the phone language configured in an Assistant compatible language
So if you want to proceed and understand how to activate Google Assistant, these are the basic requirements that your smartphone must have.
In Google terminals such as Pixel XL or XL 2, the assistant is installed by default, while in other smartphone models it will be necessary to install the corresponding application from the Play Store .
When you launch this app for the first time, go through an initial procedure that will guide you through setting up this service. We recommend updating all apps via Google Play before anything else.
Steps to activate the Google Assistant
To have “Ok Google” and its commands active in Italian , the first thing you need to do is open the Google application and access its settings from the corresponding icon with the three classic lines, which is located in the bar at the bottom of right.
There, you can find the language options to configure Italian, if the system does not recognize it automatically, by specifically selecting the “Voice” option.
By entering this option, you will see the language selected for the voice search and once you have set the Italian you can click on the “Voice Match” option and you will go to the menu where you can activate or deactivate “Ok Google”.
In this submenu you will see the ” Login with Voice Match ” option which activates the “Ok Google” command even if the screen is off or while using your favorite apps, followed by a second option ” Unlock with Voice Match ” which will allow us to unlock the phone even without touching it, and perform any activity simply by saying “Ok Google” and reciting the commands directly to the assistant.
Match Voice” will ask you to say “Ok Google” three times and build a model of your voice, it can save up to 6 different voices allowing you to change the voice model. In very few cases it was appropriate to uninstall the voice assistant and reinstall the app later.
Obviously unlocking the phone with your own voice is not as secure as with a password or a biometric reader, but the possibility of giving commands in conversational Italian and hands-free, without even having to unlock the smartphone, is probably too useful and advantageous to lose it. .
Disabling “Ok Google” is simple and can be done by accessing the same settings menu of the Google application, selecting “Voice” and deselecting the options that activate the voice assistant function. Once this is done, “Ok Google” will no longer work on your device unless you manually activate it by long pressing the start button.
If these commands do not work after activating Ok Google, surely you will have to go to “Settings-> Applications” to check the permissions of the Google app and the microphone , which will probably be disabled. Google and its support pages can help you with this. Have fun with your Google voice assistant!
